Why "AI Ready" Doesn't Mean What You Think
Most small business owners hear "AI readiness" and imagine they need a team of data scientists, a massive budget, and cutting-edge infrastructure. That's not what it means at all.
AI readiness is about three things:
- Data accessibility — Can you actually get to your business data in a structured way?
- Process clarity — Do you know which workflows eat up the most time or money?
- Cultural willingness — Is your team open to changing how they work?
"The businesses that benefit most from AI aren't the most technical — they're the most honest about where they're inefficient."
The Four Levels of AI Readiness
We assess businesses on a simple four-tier scale:
- Low (0-39) — Data lives in spreadsheets, PDFs, and people's heads. Processes are ad-hoc.
- Developing (40-64) — Some digital tools in place, but no integration. Manual handoffs everywhere.
- Moderate (65-84) — Systems are connected. Data is accessible. Team is curious about automation.
- High (85-100) — Clean data pipelines, documented processes, leadership buy-in. Ready to deploy.
Where Most Small Businesses Actually Land
In our experience, most SMBs score between 45-65 on their first assessment. That's perfectly normal — and perfectly actionable.
The key insight: you don't need to be at Level 4 to start benefiting from AI. Many of the highest-ROI implementations work at Level 2 or 3.
